China announces plans for parity PV projectsJanuary 18, 2019On 7 January 2019, China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) released a scheme for unsubsidized PV and wind power projects. Under the new scheme, pilot projects will not receive any national subsidies, but they will receive support regarding land and financing. On 8 January, NDRC added that the decline of the PV project costs in China by 45 percent from 2012 to 2017. According to NDRC, the steady increase of the economic efficiency of solar and wind projects creates favorable conditions to bring down state subsidies and to ease pressures on subsidy funds. China aims to further reduce the cost of renewable energy power by using economies of scale and by supporting the improvement of technologies. Taking into account the statement from NDRC and NEA, IHS Markit projects unsubsidized PV will generate only little demand in China before 2020.Subscribers Only

Contraction in Key Markets Will Lead to Sluggish Growth of Global Photovoltaics (PV) Demand, IHS Markit SaysApril 07, 2017LONDON (April 5, 2017) – IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions, projects that global demand for photovoltaics (PV) will reach 79 GW in 2017, a slight 2 percent increase over the 78 GW installed in 2016. This compares to annual growth that surpassed30 percent in both 2015 and 2016. An anticipated decline in the world’s three largest markets – China, United States and Japan – will shape the outlook for PV demand through this year. IHS Markit expects these markets to shrink by a combined 9 GW (16 percent year-over-year) in 2017. Similar to previous years, global demand depends highly on policy evolution in China.

Germany installed 441 MW of PV in December 2016 - tariffs remain unchangedFebruary 22, 2017On 31 January 2017, Germany’s Federal Grid Agency published that 441 MW of PV capacity were registered in December 2016. The main reason for the 140% month-on-month growth was the possibility to install landfill projects outside the tender scheme until the end of 2016. This brings the total added PV generation capacity in 2016 to 1.5 GW, and means that the FiT rate will be left unchanged. As for tender projects, the first round in 2017 was concluded on 8 February, and awarded 200 MW at prices as low as EUR60/MWh.Subscribers Only

Brexit uncertainty shakes PV demandJuly 07, 2016On 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom voted to exit the European Union. The UK will exit two years from the date of its formal notice to the European Union that it is leaving (under Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon), but the government has indicated that notification may not take place until 2018. For the photovoltaics sector, IHS projects that the referendum will have a direct negative impact on planned installations for the remainder of the year, further weakening a slowing market. UK PV outlook improves on softer than proposed cuts to solar FiT ratesDecember 17, 2015On Thursday 17 December 2015, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published its response to consultations on future financial support for PV systems in Great Britain, which had been opened in July and August this year. The final terms of the revised FiT scheme present less severe changes than the original proposal, in particular in the residential PV sector, by reducing FiT rates by 65% instead of the proposed 87% and by raising the quarterly caps. As for the Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) scheme, DECC maintains the proposed plans to close the scheme for new PV projects on 1 April 2016, to abolish grandfathering and to review the banding level for new projects that do not fall under the grandfathering protectionSubscribers Only
