Exemption of bifacial cell technology from Section 201 measures to accelerate switch from mono to bifacial cell lines outside of China and drive demand in the United StatesJune 17, 2019On 13 June 2019, United States Federal trade authorities ruled that bifacial solar modules will be exempt from Section 201 tariffs, as outlined in a notice from the Office of the United States Trade Representative. The ruling will dramatically increase demand for bifacial solar modules in the United States due to the opportunity of avoiding tariff rates of 15% to 25% through February 2022, in addition to the benefits of higher efficiencies and energy yields associated with such products. IHS Markit expects that demand for bifacial modules in the United States will be primarily served by manufacturing lines across Southeast Asia, as products shipped from China will still face antidumping and Section 301 tariffs that will make them less competitive.Subscribers Only

Revamping and repowering of Solar PV Plants: The size of the opportunity in Europe and how companies are facing this transitionNovember 14, 2018The concept of “revamping and repowering” is one of the newest terms in the solar industry. As the installed base of photovoltaic (PV) systems age, the concept of upgrading and improving operating plants becomes increasingly relevant to both manufacturers and PV plant asset managers. However, the real market size for new PV components in existing plants will depend on the characteristics of each plant, the overall regulatory framework and the economic benefits that will accrue to asset managersSubscribers Only

United States solar import tariff reaches a conclusion, but a number of questions remainJanuary 23, 2018A period of huge uncertainty in the United States PV market was ended late on Monday 22nd January 2018 when the Trump administration made a final decision on implementing import tariffs on PV cells and modules. Although many stakeholders throughout the industry had campaigned against such a decision - warning that it would reduce domestic demand for PV by raising system prices, as opposed to igniting a domestic manufacturing industry, the tariffs were deemed somewhat inevitable after the ITC (International Trade Commission) ruled in their favour in October 2017.Subscribers Only

New MIP regulation opens the European market to global module imports and begins the end of the stagnation of PV installations in EuropeOctober 23, 2017On September 16 2017, the European Commission (EC) approved the new regulation for minimum-import-prices (MIP), which is expected to slowly remove the existing trade barriers for solar cell and module imports from China and Taiwan. IHS Markit anticipates that the step-wise reduction of the minimum import prices is likely to lead to some delay of project realization towards the second half of the year.Subscribers Only

Suniva and SolarWorld propose less severe import tariffs, which would still lead to an 18 GW reduction to the outlook for US installationsOctober 05, 2017On September 28, SolarWorld and Suniva proposed new petition terms. The new proposals include a tariff of $0.25 per watt on cells and $0.32 per watt on modules in 2018. The tariff would be progressively reduced during the recommended 4-year period of relief. Under the tariff scenario, IHS Markit forecasts the United States will install 27 GW of utility-scale PV and 19 GW of distributed residential and commercial PV during the period.Subscribers Only
