Utility affiliates seek to bolster near-term pipelines by acquiring solar and wind assets from SunEdison in the United StatesAugust 24, 2016In August, leading utility affiliates NRG Renew (NRG Energy) and SoCore Energy (Edison International) formerly offered two separate and unique bids for a significant portion of SunEdison’s renewable assets under development in the United States. Each bid sets an initial floor price for the specified assets, with competing bids due in September 2016. Final asset sales to winning bidders are expected to receive official approval by the end of September. If successful, IHS Markit notes NRG Energy and Edison International will respectively gain significant footholds within the U.S. utility-scale solar and community solar market segments. Both proposed acquisitions represent a growing trend of utilities seeking to develop and own PV assets, either directly or through subsidiaries.
