The IHS Markit energy storage team attended and presented at the United States’ Energy Storage Association (ESA) Annual Energy Storage Conference & Expo (ESACon) in Phoenix from 16-18 April 2019. As one of the major industry conferences in the United States, ESACon raised a range of pivotal market and policy topics. The major trends observed throughout the event were the potential introduction of an Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for standalone storage systems; the opportunities for energy storage as transmission and distribution (T&D) assets; operation and maintenance (O&M) of energy storage systems; safety of energy storage systems and wider trends in the battery industry; as well as the opportunities emerging for solar-plus-storage in the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment in the United States.

Key Messages

  • The adoption of a standalone ITC for storage would have significant impact on demand in the US market
  • Utilizing energy storage to support T&D infrastructure or to defer infrastructure upgrades could be the strongest long-term market drivers in the United States
  • Different O&M strategies are being developed, but further education and maturity is needed
  • Battery safety concerns will drive the development of new standards
  • Demand for solar-plus-storage extends to the C&I sector
