Polysilicon Prices Affected by Continued China-US Trade Dispute
Jessica Jin and Karl Melkonyan
The IHS PV Integrated Market Tracker Q3 2015 edition published last September discussed the severe short-term and mid-term implications of the closing of the Chinese module supply chain market for most Western polysilicon players. As IHS forecast, the global polysilicon producers are now facing different market situations depending on their manufacturing origin.
- Spot polysilicon ASP in China has rebounded after the Chinese New Year (mid-February).
- Due to the very strong demand from their domestic market, Chinese polysilicon producers have reduced their inventory levels significantly.
- Western producers have banned access to the Chinese market and are struggling with the financial consequences of the existing trade war, which is resulting in an increase of polysilicon inventories.
- Consolidation continues within the polysilicon industry. Some important players have reduced their business scale and only a few players have announced capacity expansion plans in 2016 so far.
